Snow and ice are built from the exact same material: frozen water, clear as window glass. The difference is assembly. An ice cube is one continuous block, so light enters, travels straight through, and comes out the other side — you see whatever is behind it. Snow is that same clear ice shattered into millions of tiny crystals with air packed between them. Light entering snow cannot travel straight; at every boundary between crystal and air it bends and bounces in a new direction. After thousands of bounces, light of every color comes back out the top in roughly equal amounts — and equal parts of every color is what your eye reads as white.

One material, two assemblies

A single snowflake, viewed up close, is transparent. Hold one on a dark glove and you can nearly see through it. But fresh snow on the ground is mostly not ice at all — the bulk of its volume is trapped air, with delicate crystals barely touching each other. That structure gives light an enormous number of surfaces to hit. Each surface redirects the beam a little; the pile as a whole redirects it completely, sending it back the way it came without favoring any color.

The bounce-back budget

This is why fresh snowfall is so blinding on a sunny day: a fresh white snowpack reflects most of the sunlight that hits it straight back to the sky. An ice rink, by contrast, swallows light into its depth or passes it through. Same molecules, opposite behavior — all decided by whether the light meets one big surface or millions of small ones.

The proof is in the melt

If whiteness lived in the water itself, melted snow would be white liquid. It is not — it is perfectly clear, because melting collapses the crystal-and-air structure that did the scattering (the bouncing of light in every direction). Press snow hard enough and the same thing happens without melting: squeeze the air out of a snowball long enough and it turns icy and translucent. The color was never in the material. It was in the construction.

Why does snow turn clear when you squeeze it?

Squeezing presses the air out and fuses the crystals into fewer, larger pieces of ice. With fewer crystal-air boundaries, light bounces less and passes through more — so a hard-packed snowball starts looking icy and translucent.

Why do glaciers look blue instead of white?

Glacier ice is old snow crushed until nearly all the air is gone. Light travels deep inside before escaping, and on that long path ice absorbs a bit more red light than blue — so the light that returns has a blue tint.

Is a single snowflake white?

No — an individual snowflake is transparent, like a tiny pane of shaped glass. The white appears only when many crystals pile together and light ricochets between them, exiting in every direction at once.
