Some nights, a breaking wave lights up electric blue, a kayak paddle leaves a glowing trail, and footprints flash in the wet sand. Nothing in the water is burning, and nothing is reflecting the moon. The sea is full of single-celled drifters called dinoflagellates — plankton smaller than a grain of sand — and each one can fire off a tiny flash of blue light when the water shoves it. Multiply one spark by the trillions of cells in a dense bloom and the whole surf line ignites.

The flinch of a single cell

The flash is a defense reflex, and it is absurdly fast. When a wave, a fish, or a swimmer's hand jostles the cell, the mechanical stress trips an internal acid switch, which sets off a chemical reaction that burns luciferin — the fuel molecule that ends its reaction as light. From shove to light takes less than 20 milliseconds, one of the fastest cellular responses known, and each flash lasts about a tenth of a second. The cell spends its light fuel through the night and rebuilds the supply by day, which is one reason the show is strictly nocturnal.

Why blue, and why only some nights

The color is pure physics. Seawater swallows red light within a few meters, while blue light travels farthest through it — so ocean light-makers overwhelmingly signal in blue, and 80 percent of the animals living between 200 and 1,000 meters down make their own light. At the surface, you only notice the glow when the drifters bloom in force: a dense bloom can pack some 20 million cells into a single liter of seawater. On those nights, every turbulence — wave, wake, dolphin, footstep — becomes visible as light.

The alarm that calls a bigger fish

Why flash at all? The leading idea is the burglar alarm. A sudden burst of light can startle a grazing predator into letting go — and, better, it spotlights that predator for something larger hunting nearby. A cell too small to fight or flee instead calls the neighborhood's attention to whatever is trying to eat it. The glowing surf you photograph is, up close, a crowd of microscopic alarms all going off at once.
