Thunder rumbles because lightning is not a point — it is a sound source stretched across miles of sky. A single bolt superheats a narrow channel of air to around 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit, about five times hotter than the surface of the sun. The air along that channel expands violently, faster than sound itself, and every inch of the path fires off its own shock wave. You are not hearing one bang. You are hearing millions of tiny bangs, launched simultaneously from points at very different distances from your ears.

The arrival schedule

Sound is slow — it takes about five seconds to cover a mile, while the light from the flash reaches you effectively instantly. A lightning channel, though it strikes just one spot on the ground, travels many miles through the air, branching and zigzagging as it goes. The shock wave from the nearest section of the channel arrives first, often as a sharp crack. Sound from sections a mile, two miles, three miles farther along the same bolt keeps arriving for seconds afterward. One instantaneous event gets smeared into a long roll, purely because its parts are staggered in distance.

Why the tail sounds soft

The far end of the bolt does not just arrive late — it arrives worn down. As shock waves travel, the atmosphere stretches and blurs them: high, sharp frequencies fade fastest, leaving the low bass tones that carry farthest. That is why the rumble deepens as it goes on. It is also why distance changes the whole character of thunder: a strike nearby delivers a crack, while a bolt several miles away reaches you only as a low rumble. Beyond roughly 10 miles, the sound usually cannot reach you at all — you see the flash, but the storm stays silent.

Echoes are the garnish, not the meal

Thunder can pick up extra reverberation from hills, buildings, and layers of air, and that adds texture to the tail. But the rumble does not depend on any of it. The staggered arrival times are built into the geometry of the bolt itself — a miles-long sound source can never reach you as a single clean bang.

Why does thunder sometimes crack instead of rumble?

Distance. A sharp crack means the lightning channel passed close by, so the sound arrives fresh and compact. A rumble means the bolt was at least several miles away — the arrivals are spread out and the sharp high tones have faded en route.

How does counting seconds tell you how far away lightning is?
