Lightning looks like one instant crack from cloud to ground, but the bolt is actually built in pieces. Before the flash you see, an invisible channel called a stepped leader — the scout that drafts the route — works its way down from the cloud in short jumps, each about 50 meters long. After every jump it pauses for a fraction of a millisecond, effectively testing the surrounding air, then jumps again toward whichever nearby pocket of air is easiest to break down. Air is not uniform: humidity, temperature, dust, and stray charged particles vary from spot to spot, so the easiest next segment is almost never straight below the last one. Ten thousand small detours later, you get a zigzag.

The route is drafted in segments

According to NOAA, the leader descends in steps about 160 feet (50 meters) long, each lasting around a microsecond, with a roughly 50-microsecond pause between them. During each pause the tip of the channel is surrounded by patches of air in different states of readiness to conduct. Recent research points to a buildup of an unusually conductive form of oxygen near the tip; wherever that patch happens to sit — a little left, a little right — is where the next segment gets drawn. The whole survey from cloud to full length takes only about 50 milliseconds, so your eye never sees the drafting process, only the finished line.

The flash traces the finished drawing

When a leader segment finally connects with a channel of positive charge reaching up from the ground, the circuit closes. A massive current — the return stroke — races back up through the exact path the leader drafted. That is the brilliant flash you actually see, and it can only follow the crooked route already built. The zigzag was decided before the light show started.

Why not straight, ever?

A straight line would require the atmosphere to be perfectly uniform for miles — same density, same humidity, same charge everywhere. Real air over a storm is turbulent and patchy by definition. Each step is a local decision, not part of a master plan, and thousands of local decisions through messy air can only add up to a jagged line. Branches form the same way: when two pockets of air are nearly equally easy to break down, the leader forks and drafts both.
