The cloth spine

The design dates to 1943, when a wartime factory inspector named Vesta Stoudt got fed up with paper tape failing on ammunition boxes and wrote to President Roosevelt proposing a waterproof cloth tape. Johnson & Johnson built it. Soldiers called it 100-mile-per-hour tape.

Where the case falls apart

The grip depends entirely on intimate contact, so anything that blocks contact defeats it. Dust gives the glue loose particles to hug instead of the surface. Water slips a film between glue and target. Nonstick coatings refuse to let the adhesive spread out at all. And deep cold stiffens the glue until it stops flowing. Duct tape does not stick to everything — it sticks to everything it can actually touch. On Apollo 13 in 1970, that was enough: NASA engineers used it to jury-rig the air scrubber that kept three astronauts breathing.
