Open the dishwasher and the case looks the same every time: plates bone-dry, glasses gleaming, and one plastic container holding a small private rainstorm. The machine didn't skip it. The plastic just can't do the thing that dries everything else — hold on to heat. Most dishwashers don't towel anything off; they end with a very hot rinse and let the dishes dry themselves. Ceramic, glass and metal are dense, so they soak up that final blast and stay warm for long minutes afterward, steaming their own droplets away. A thin plastic lid barely stores any heat at all. It cools almost immediately, and evaporation itself makes things worse — turning water into vapor pulls energy from the surface, so the little heat the plastic had gets spent even faster. The heat bank

The plastic lid gets the same payday and blows it instantly: thin walls, low density, nothing in the vault. By the time the door clicks open, the mug is still warm to the touch and dry; the lid is room temperature and wet.

The beads don't help

There's a second suspect in the margin notes. Most plastics are hydrophobic — water-fearing — so water refuses to spread across them and instead huddles into fat beads. On ceramic and metal, the same water flattens into a thin film with lots of surface exposed to the air, which evaporates quickly. A plump bead has far less surface for its volume, so even with some heat available it dries slowly. Cold surface plus stubborn beads: that's the whole conspiracy.

What actually works

Crack the door open at the end of the cycle so the humid air escapes instead of condensing back onto everything. Put plastics on the top rack tilted so water can't pool in the recessed lids. A rinse-aid helps too — it lowers the water's grip on itself so droplets sheet off instead of beading. Or accept the verdict, do the one-item towel pass, and move on with your evening.
