Rivers curve because straight is unstable. Water never flows perfectly evenly: a boulder, a soft patch of bank, a fallen log — any tiny deflection pushes the fastest current toward one side of the channel. Fast water digs; slow water drops what it carries. So the nudged side erodes while the sheltered side silts up, the slight bend becomes a real bend, and the real bend keeps feeding itself. Give a river a flat plain and enough time, and it will draft its own curves — no hills or obstacles required.
The feedback loop on the drafting table
Inside any bend, the current splits its work. The fastest thread of water swings to the outside of the curve, where it cuts the bank and deepens the channel. On the inside, the water slows and dumps its sand and gravel, building a gently sloping bar. The bend therefore migrates: cut bank retreats, point bar advances, and the whole curve grows wider and swings downstream. A corkscrew current — water spiraling from the surface toward the outer bank and back along the bed — keeps shoveling sediment from the outside of the bend to the inside, driving the loop.
Curves built to spec
The strangest part is how regular the result is. Measure meandering rivers from a creek you can step over to the Mississippi and the same proportions appear: one full bend cycle runs about 10 to 14 channel widths long — roughly 11 on average — and the turns have a radius of about 2 to 3 channel widths. The river's size sets the scale, but the blueprint is shared. That is why a tiny stream in a mudflat and a continental river look identical from above once you hide the scale bar.
When a bend overshoots
Bends do not grow forever. As a loop tightens, its neck narrows, until one flood shortcuts across and straightens the reach in an afternoon. The abandoned loop is left behind as a crescent-shaped oxbow lake — a decommissioned drawing of where the river used to run. Then the feedback starts again on the new, straighter channel, and new curves begin to grow. A river is never finished; it is permanently under revision.
