Geese fly in a V because the shape is a fuel-saving machine. Every flap of a goose's wings throws air downward under the body — but just outside each wingtip, that same air curls back upward. Scientists call this rising ribbon of air upwash — the free lift spinning off the tip of a flying wing. A goose that positions itself behind and slightly to the side of the bird ahead sits right in that rising air, so the sky itself carries part of its weight. Multiply that across a dozen birds and you get the V: two lines of geese, each one surfing the wake of the wing in front.
The rising air off a wingtip
A wing makes lift by pushing air down. That air doesn't vanish — it spills around the wingtips and spins, leaving a wake that sinks in the middle and rises at the edges. The trick is standing in the right part of it. Directly behind a goose, the air pushes down and flying gets harder. Off to the side, it pushes up. So each bird slots in behind-and-beside its neighbor, which is exactly the geometry that draws a V across the sky. A famous 2014 study of ibises trained to follow a microlight showed the birds don't just hold the right spot — they time their flaps to keep their wings in the rising part of the wave.
What the savings buy
Heart-rate monitors taped to pelicans flying in formation showed trailing birds' hearts beat slower and their wings flapped less than the leader's — savings estimated at up to 10 to 14 percent. On a migration where a Canada goose can cover hundreds of miles in a day, that margin is the difference between arriving with reserves and arriving spent.
Why the front keeps changing
The lead position gets no upwash from anyone, so it's the most expensive seat in the formation. Flocks handle this the fair way: birds rotate through the front, sharing the cost. The V has a bonus feature too — because each bird flies offset from the one ahead, every goose keeps a clear view forward. It's a fuel line and a window at the same time.

Does the goose at the front lead because it's in charge?
No. The front is simply the hardest-working slot — it gets no lift from any bird ahead. Flocks rotate through the lead position, sharing the cost rather than following a fixed boss.
Why don't geese fly directly behind each other?
