Music trips that alarm in a body that knows it is safe, so you get the full physical thrill with none of the danger. The colder skin, the raised hairs, the slight catch in your breath: real alarm, staged threat.

Why your friend feels nothing

Not everyone gets chills. Research on university students found roughly half of listeners experience them, and brain scans showed why: chill-getters have a denser bundle of fibers connecting their hearing centers to their emotion centers. The music is the same; the wiring is not. If a swelling chorus leaves you cold, your ears are fine — the hotline between sound and feeling just carries less traffic.
